Avakas Gorge

Nestled at the beginning of the Akamas peninsula, 16 km west of Paphos (Pafos), lies the amazing masterpiece of nature, Avakas Gorge. It is one of the most impressive natural wonders of the Paphos region and a must-visit destination for travelers who love hiking and nature. This 3 km long gorge boasts of magnificent rock formations, limestone walls up to 30 meters high, and rich local flora and fauna. Avakas Gorge was created over thousands of years by a raging stream that flowed over the limestone and carved out the walls of the gorge. The result is a narrow and winding path that can be challenging for some visitors. The terrain is slippery, and clambering over stones and rocks is required in certain places, making it a difficult hike. As such, visitors are advised to wear casual-sport clothes and footwear, bring plenty of water and inform someone before entering the gorge. One of the key features of the Avakas Gorge is the endangered centauria akamantis, an endemic plant species that can only be found in the area. The gorge is one of the few remaining habitats for this rare plant, making it a crucial site for conservation efforts. Visitors can also spot junipers, pine trees, cypresses, oaks, wild fig trees, and other tree species in the gorge. The diverse range of flora is complemented by a rich fauna that includes foxes, hares, falcons, crows, night owls, butterflies, and various reptile species. If lucky, visitors can also catch a glimpse of fruit bats, which are known to inhabit the area. Getting to the Avakas Gorge is an adventure in itself. It is advisable to use a 4x4 car, but saloon cars can also reach the destination. Visitors should also wear hats to protect themselves from the sun during the journey, as most of the time, the route is exposed to direct sunlight. The best time to visit the Avakas Gorge is during spring or autumn when the weather is mild, and the flora is in full bloom. During the summer months, it can get too hot, so visitors should plan their hike early in the day. Conversely, winter months are not recommended as the small stream turns into a torrent, and water levels can become too deep for safe passage. In conclusion, Avakas Gorge is a natural wonder that every traveler to Cyprus should experience. The challenge of hiking through the winding path is well worth it, as visitors are treated to magnificent views of the rock formations, lush flora, and diverse fauna. As a conservation site for rare plant species, visitors should respect and protect the environment during their visit to the Avakas Gorge.
