Machairas - Lazanias

The Machairas - Lazanias nature trail is a beautiful and challenging route that follows the Pedieos River, the largest river-torrent in Cyprus, with a length of 98 mm. The trail starts 500 meters from the Monastery of Machairas and ends in Lazanias, covering a distance of 2 km and taking approximately an hour to complete. The trail is rated as a Category 3 difficulty, meaning it has a high degree of difficulty due to its steep gradient, rough and slippery terrain. Therefore, it is not recommended for young children. The Pedieos River is a natural environment rich in flora and fauna, making it a beautiful destination for nature lovers. The river's source is located in the Troodos mountain range, near the Machairas Monastery. It flows northwest, crossing the Mesaoria plain and the capital city of Nicosia, before finally emptying into the Famagusta Bay, near the ancient city of Salamis. The name "Pedieos" comes from the ancient Greek words idein and Acid, which means sunrise or dawn. The river's name represents its course, as it coincides with the path of Eos, the goddess of the East, and the sunrise. In antiquity, this made it a useful landmark for positioning and navigation. The Pedieos River's water has been used since ancient times to fortify the city of Nicosia. The specially constructed wells surrounding the Venetian city walls were channeled with the river's water to block enemy interference. In 2002, the Linear Park plan area was created along the river, offering a 14 km pedestrian length, mostly to the municipalities of Lakatamia and Strovolos. This park has become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, providing a space to enjoy the river's natural beauty while walking, jogging or cycling. The Machairas - Lazanias nature trail is a relatively short but challenging hike. The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the river's natural beauty up close, including the various plants and animals that call it home. It is an ideal destination for those who seek a physical challenge while enjoying the serenity of nature. The route starts from the Machairas Monastery, an important religious site on the island, and follows the Pedieos River. The trail includes steep gradients and rough terrain, which require proper hiking gear and a good level of fitness. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, as the terrain can be slippery, and they should also bring enough water and snacks for the hike. The trail ends in Lazanias, a picturesque village known for its traditional architecture and rich history. Lazanias is an excellent destination for hikers to rest and enjoy the local cuisine and hospitality. In conclusion, the Machairas - Lazanias nature trail is a challenging yet rewarding hike that offers a unique opportunity to experience the Pedieos River's natural beauty up close. It is an excellent destination for nature lovers and hikers who seek a physical challenge while enjoying the serenity of nature. However, due to its high level of difficulty, it is not recommended for young children or inexperienced hikers. So, if you are up for a physical challenge and a beautiful adventure, the Machairas - Lazanias nature trail is definitely worth a visit.
